Gary D. Haney

Gary D. Haney 78, of Flatwoods, Ky passed away on Friday October 6, 2023 at the Community Hospice House on Pollard Road in Ashland, Ky following an extended illness of 4 years with vascular dementia. Gary was born September 3, 1945 in Ashland, Ky to the late Ronnie C. and Gladys Riggs Haney. He retired in January 2008 from Armco/A K Steel after 43 years of dedicated service as a maintenance repairman. He was an active member of the House of Grace Church in Ashland. Having a Servant’s spirit, he helped out with the food ministry for the Ashland Community and tended to the lawn care needs for the church property. Gary loved spending time with his family. He was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. He was an avid UK basketball fan, watching games and attending the UKIT with his brother Darrell for many years. Gary was fun loving and loved to laugh and joke. For many years, he helped solve the world’s problems with his buddies at the Dairy Queen in Flatwoods where they met for breakfast. He will be greatly missed by so many. Gary served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1967-1971. He was a 1963 graduate from Russell High School, being the first graduating class of the “new high school”. As an alumni, you could find Gary on the bleachers at every game cheering on the Red Devils. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time during the winter in Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Haney Gillian and a brother, Roger E. Haney. He is survived by two sons, Gary Stephen Haney of Dundee, Fl and Brian Edward Haney (Kendra) of Trenton, OH and a daughter, Fannie Lou Haney Elkins (Paul) of Worthington, Ky. His former wife of 25 years and mother of his children, Linda George of Ashland. One brother, Darrell Haney of Bellefonte, Ky. Two sisters, Janice Haney Dooley of Ormond Beach, Fl and Lisa Haney Childers of Flatwoods, Ky. His grandchildren Zach Haney ( Kaelyn), Emily Haney Powell (Benjamin), Austin Haney, Bryce Haney, Faith Elkins, and Garrett Elkins. His great grandchildren Gracie and Lucy Haney. Funeral Services will be conducted by Ron Rucker with House of Grace, 1:00 pm Thursday, October 12, 2023 at the MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 1941 Carter Ave, Ashland, Ky. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, October 11th, 5:00-9:00 pm and Thursday October 12th, 10:00-1:00 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky immediately following the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Zach Haney, Austin Haney, Bryce Haney, Garrett Elkins, Cameron Elkins, and Brandon Elkins. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge Morning Pointe of Russell, KY, the staff of KDMC, the staff of Oakmont Manor, Flatwoods, and the staff of the Sanctuary in Ironton, Oh, for their excellent care in his final months of life.
